Ann Cleeves writes several different mystery series. I began with her Shetland island series and then moved on to the Vera Stanhope while I am waiting for publication of the next in the Shetland Island series. This is book 4 of the Vera Stanhope series. What can you say about Vera Stanhope? Ann Cleeves has a talent for creating distinctive, but believable characters. Vera is a prime example of a character that is both interesting and compelling. You won’t drown in descriptions of places and settings, but you will still be so totally surrounded by her places and settings that you may find yourself startled to be sitting on your sofa. Here the hotel with the swimming pool and sauna where Vera found the body is a big part of the plot and it defines behaviors and traits of her characters. If you are just discovering Ann Cleeves you are in for a treat. Vera Stanhope Mysteries are simply some of the best murder mysteries to read! If you have seen any of Vera on television then you will love the books. Though I had just the week before watched this particular Vera story on Netflix I was so surprised at how much more there was in the book to the storyline. For one thing the author lets you "read" Vera's thoughts. And my oh my, getting into Vera's head really brings this character to life. You come to see why she is the way she is - her self-depricating comments, her lonely life -- it all gets fleshed out through the written thoughts of Vera. Ditto for her sargent Joe as well. From time to time the author gives you a glimps inside his head and you more clearly see and get to know Vera through his thoughts.As for the mystery itself - fast paced, well thought out, hard to figure out -- no figuring out the ending in the middle of this book - and has a very satisfying ending bringing all the threads together. All in all - I absolutely love Vera and can hardly wait to read another. Just wish all of the Vera books were available for Kindle.
