Update:I’ll try to keep this review spoiler-free.If you ignore the typos, poor grammar, and formatting issues that are on pretty much every single page, it’s still just an exceptionally poorly-written book.Mariana Zapata is a one-hit wonder. She wrote one heck of a 4-star book with The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. Don’t get me wrong. That book is still severely flawed. There are typos everywhere. It looks like it hasn’t been edited. The book drags in places, and a lot of the scenes can be cut in half. However, it’s still a book which speaks to the potential of Zapata as an author.Kulti was a 2-star read with loads of potential. The typos and grammatical issues are there. There are so many plot holes. Yet, it still hooked me in its weird way. I will say that, at that point, I noticed that Zapata’s characters are cardboard replicas of one another.Reading Luna and the Lie, I am reminded of all of Zapata’s flaws as a writer. The characters, again, are duplicates of her old characters—recycled with a new plot. She writes the same story over and over and over again, and after the first two times, it got old.Luna is extremely weak-willed and always blames others for her faults. This is like Zapata’s other heroines, so I came in expecting this, but it’s still difficult to stomach. She never takes responsibility for her own faults and practically begs Rip to save her. Spoiler alert: he does, and she never builds a spine.Rip is unbelievable as a character. He’s a flat character with an inconsistent personality, and the absence of his point of view does little to abate these inconsistencies.Luna and Rip are unable to communicate. They go back and forth, talking about the same things over and over, the same problems over and over. These problems find the slowest resolution possible, laden with error-filled text that reads as filler rather than contributive plot or development.I love slow-burn romance novels, but when they depend on filler to add to their length, it becomes a chore to read. The story didn’t hold my attention enough to justify the length. Since the plot was all over the place, it left me scratching my head and distracted me from the actual relationship developing between Rip and Luna. The lack of chemistry Rip and Luna share doesn’t help. The story is all over the place. It lacks the cohesion you’d expect from a seasoned writer. The dialogue is practically non-existent. The narrator, Luna, repeats the same thoughts over and over again and goes through five pages of internal monologue before she finally responds to something someone says. It’s tedious reading this book, forcing yourself to turn the pages because you’ve already spent too much time and money reading the book to quit now.The writing itself needs a lot of work. It’s underdeveloped in places and overdeveloped in other places. Line by line, the prose is juvenile and repetitive—what you’d expect from a young debut writer not someone with about a dozen books under her belt. For instance, the same description is used throughout the text. We get it. Rip is “huge” and “large” and “big.” There are other (re: better) ways to describe huge/large/big men—words you can’t find on a pre-school spelling list. There’s a lot of telling instead of showing. The book is unedited and un-proofread. Like all Mariana Zapata books, expect quality-control issues. Typos on every page, weird line breaks in the middle of sentences, misplaced or lacking commas, and grammatical errors are all frequent throughout the text.Note:If we removed the bad writing and leave the characters and plot, the story wouldn’t have bones to stand on. I cannot find it redeemable in any way. I initially gave the book a 2-star review, but going back, I cannot add that extra star just because I liked Wall of Winnipeg. It isn’t fair to other authors who could write a book with this lack of quality and be given a 1-star review by me. I really wanted to like this book, but like every Zapata book after Wall of Winnipeg (and before Wall of Winnipeg), it is poorly written.Original: I love slow burn romances, but this was all filler. There was also a ton of typos. It was difficult to get through the book.I’ll add to my review later. Mariana's books, Kulti and Wall of Winnipeg, are two of my favorite contemporary novels - I've reread them dozens of times. I'm a huge fan of her writing and have waited for each book in eager anticipation. For the past few years though, I've liked each new release less and less; the pacing feels slower, language is overly descriptive, and the characters are less likable and relatable. I don't mean to be harsh, but I could not read past the 6th chapter. The book feels like a long, boring internal monologue from Luna's point of view... not to mention the incessant descriptions of how muscular and huge Ripley is. Yes, for the 5th time, I know his biceps are the size of thighs and his forearms are the size of calves. I tried to soldier on, but I could not muster any kind of connection to the characters or excitement for where the story was headed.
